The Shrine God
The god of Kumano Taisha Shrine is the god “Musuhi”. “Musuhi” is the power that brings forth life, whether animal, plant, and even human. This world was born by the power of “Musuhi”.
In our national anthem, there are these lyrics. “Until the tiny pebbles grow into massive boulders, lush with moss.” As the song goes, with the passing of time, small stones become boulders, and their surface becomes covered with moss.
This living moss is born from nature on a boulder with nothing on it. There is a mysterious power at work that cannot be seen with the eye. It is the power which causes life to be born. People of old called this mysterious power “Musu”.

Reconstruction was done under the imperial edict of the Emperor Heisei in 806 AD. Called “Okumansama” as the god of Hojogosochinju it was beloved by the people. Counted as one of the three Kumano Shrines of Japan, it is regarded even now as a sacred place of the Kumano faith of Tohoku
